Dr. Éric Mercier is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family Medicine and Emergency Medicine at Université Laval. He is a specialist in Emergency Medicine (FRCPC) at CHU de Québec – Université Laval and completed advanced training in clinical research and traumatology at Monash University, Melbourne, Australia.
Driven by the challenges of modern healthcare, he investigates innovative approaches to prehospital emergency services, community paramedicine, the organization of primary care, and traumatology. His research program is devoted to enhancing the health and quality of life of vulnerable populations, with particular attention to older adults and individuals living with mental health disorders.
He is a Health System Impact Fellow of the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and serves as Regional Medical Director of Prehospital Emergency Services at the CIUSSS de la Capitale-Nationale. His research is closely integrated within the healthcare system, tailored to the Québec context, and responsive to the needs of local populations in both urban and rural settings. He collaborates actively with frontline professionals and policymakers to harmonize existing services and develop evidence-based solutions addressing identified gaps.
Additionally, he serves as Local Medical Director of the Canadian Hospitals Injury Reporting and Prevention Program (CHIRPP) and places a strong emphasis on injury prevention and public health. A member of multiple strategic networks, he is actively engaged in national and international collaborations. He has authored over 140 scientific publications, including numerous articles in high-impact journals such as The Lancet, The BMJ, JAMA Internal Medicine, JAMA Surgery, Journal of Clinical Psychiatry, Journal of the American Geriatrics Society, Resuscitation, and Annals of Emergency Medicine.
